Rental assistance available in Champaign

CHAMPAIGN – Rental assistance is available for a limited number of homeless or low-income Champaign residents.
Using the City of Champaign's HOME funds, a federal grant of $90,000, the Champaign County Regional Plan Commission will give grants to people who enroll in a program to significantly improve household self-sufficiency within two years.
Rent assistance will be one tool to support households working toward their goals.
Preference will be given to applicants who live or work in Champaign or are homeless or near-homeless, according to Sheila Dodd, grant compliance coordinator with Champaign.
Participants must be willing to work with case managers to develop and reach goals which may include steps to manage a budget, improve credit, complete educational classes, improve employment or other activities to improve self-sufficiency, she said
The household income must be less than $27,400 for single people or $39,100 for a family of four, according to Dodd.
For more information, call Nicole Martin at the plan commission, 328-3313.
